As a cinematic couples photographer, prompts are one of my favorite ways to bring photos to life. Instead of stiff posing, prompts give couples something to do. The result? Real movement, real reactions, and photos that feel like a scene from your own story.
Here are 10 of my favorite prompts I use during couples sessions that always create natural, cinematic moments.

1. Lead your partner.
This is one of the easiest prompts that I use almost every session, and it can be interpreted in so many different ways. You can have them run, slow walk, away from you, towards you, and even perpendicular to you. It truly gives you all the variety in the easiest way.

2. Nuzzle noses or Eskimo kisses.
This one is so romantic and easy. Almost everyone knows what an eskimo kiss is, but if not, “rub noses” works perfectly as well. You can do this as an add-on to a prompt you already gave them—sitting down, laying down, standing up, or even while one partner is picking the other up. I’m all for prompts that I can use in many ways.

3. Whisper something ridiculous.
This is one of my go-to prompts when I want genuine laughter. I’ll tell one partner to whisper the most random or ridiculous thing they can think of into the other’s ear. It always breaks any nerves and gives the most natural smiles.

4. The almost kiss.
Instead of going straight in for the kiss, I’ll have couples get super close—foreheads touching, noses almost brushing—and just stay there for a moment. The tension and anticipation makes the moment feel incredibly intimate and cinematic.

5. Pick them up.
Whether it’s a piggyback ride, a spinning hug, or a dramatic lift, this prompt brings so much movement into photos. It’s playful, romantic, and always gets couples laughing.

6. Fall into your significant other’s arms.
This is like a forward-facing trust fall. One partner falls back into the other’s arms and lets them catch them. You can fall into a kiss, fall into a big embrace, or just laugh together when you land. Truly whatever feels natural for the couple. It makes for the sweetest images every time.

7. Kisses all over the face.
Whether you are attacking them with kisses or kissing them slowly, this prompt can go so many different ways. It can feel playful and silly, or super slow and romantic. Either way, it always creates really sweet, genuine reactions.

8. Dance together.
Instead of focusing on perfect steps, it’s all about movement and connection…like something straight out of The Notebook or a dreamy scene from La La Land. Whether you’re having a slow, romantic sway or breaking into something playful and spontaneous, the goal is just to feel the moment together. You can try a slow dance, a swing dance, or even a totally goofy, offbeat breakdown; whatever feels right in the moment. We’ll play music that matches your energy, so you can get lost in it, laugh, and create something that feels effortless, natural, and completely your own.

9. Running toward each other.
I’ll have couples start a little distance apart and run toward each other like they haven’t seen each other in years. When you finally meet, you can kiss passionately, go in for a huge embrace, or just do whatever feels natural in that moment.

10. Rolling around together.
This one is playful, chaotic, and honestly so fun. I’ll have couples lay down in the sand, grass, or wherever we are and just roll around together, laughing and bumping into each other. It feels super carefree and always creates those candid, joy-filled moments that look straight out of a movie.
